In December, Winged Pride published an article giving our thoughts of Scott Cullen's analysis of the top player's in the AHL. Upon writing the article we had a few questions for Scott. He was gracious enough to respond to us with a little bit of insight on how he calculated his findings and categorized player value. Click the jump for the rest of the article.
Originally we had asked Scott what his criteria was for ranking players, for example how do you compare a forward to a goalie? How does a star rookie prospect who has no reputation stack up against a seasoned veteran AHLer? His response is below,
"There are so few stats widely available for AHLers, that the overall rating represents a per-game value based on goals, assists, plus-minus and shots on goal." Scott has, I am sure been scouring over loads of information trying to rate players. However, there is not enough time or available information(that we here at Winged Pride are aware of) to accurately rank players without using stats, despite their inherent misleading quality in hockey. But there is definitely still value in what Scott has done. It shows that the Red Wings are still a great developmental team. They are getting a lot of players in the drafts and they are developing a lot of players and these guys are working hard together and improving as a unit.
We at Winged Pride have a very obvious bias towards the Wings and this blog is definitely very Red Wings centric, and it is in this instance where we get an opportunity to rate our prospects against theirs and see where they fall. In this case, they stack up well, grabbing 10% of the list.
We also asked Scott about the lack of goalie representation and his response was pretty much exactly what we expected, "My best guess on low goalie representation early (up to three in the last update) would be not enough games played for some of the top guys and then a few others who just missed."
Winged Pride wants to thank Scott for getting back to us and giving us a little bit of insight about the choices he made. Share what you think in the comment section, who excites you, were there any surprises on the list for you? We would love to have a little bit more discussion on here.
